Mostly all the people who call Encinitas home enjoy the outdoors…and who wouldn’t in a beautiful oceanside town that’s full of mountains, beaches, golf courses, and natural wonders! On my way into my office today, I passed by Oakcrest Park and thought of writing a post today about all the great parks here in town so that those of you who bought a new Encinitas house can get familiar with the many parks in the area.
You don’t have to have kids, or be a kid, to enjoy a park. You can bring a book or magazine to catch up on and enjoy a spring afternoon reading and catching fresh air. Perhaps you’d like to get back in shape for the summer months and you would like to get out and walk or jog in the park. Or maybe you need a place for Rex to run around at as many of the parks offer off-leash dog hours. So without further ado, here are a few of my favorite parks in Encinitas and what each of them have to offer.
Oakcrest Park: 1219 Encinitas Blvd.
Playgrounds for the kids, picnic facilities available, restrooms and handicap areas. Enjoy bocce ball or horseshoes at Oakcrest Park! This place is perfect for family gatherings, company outings, or just a great way to spend an afternoon! Beer and wine are allowed at Oakcrest Park but no glass containers please.
Glen Park: 2149 Orinda Drive
Playgrounds for children, picnic area, restrooms and handicap access. Glen Park features courts for basketball, tennis and volleyball and even has a horseshoe pit for use. No alcohol is allowed and neither are glass containers, so be advised.
Leucadia Oaks Park: 1511 N Vulcan Ave
Play equipment and picnic facilities are available. There is handicap access in the park, but there are no bathrooms. Skateboarders and rollerbladers will enjoy the skate park at Leucadia Oaks Park (just wear a helmet and pads please!!!), and those who can’t skate well will be able to have fun at the basketball and volleyball courts. Beer and wine are allowed in the park, but no glass please and be sure to throw out your trash!
Sun Vista Park: 2011 Avenida La Posta
Playground equipment, picnic area, handicap accessible, yet no restrooms here at Sun Vista Park. This wide open park is perfect for those who need a place for their dogs to run around and interact with other dogs! Off-leash hours are from 6am to 9am and 3pm to 8pm on the east side of the park on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Beer and wine are permissible in the park, but no glass containers.
Leo Mullen Sports Park: 951 Via Cantebria
Playground for the young kids, handicap accessibility, picnic area, restrooms and a trail head. For those interested in going on a bit of a hike, Leo Mullen Sports Park is the entrance of one of the several walking paths in Encinitas. And they don’t call it a sports park for nothing…there are baseball, soccer and basketball fields and courts available. There is no alcohol or glass containers allowed in the park.
