Here are the current requirements regarding smoke alarm installation in California, from the California State Fire Marshal. For more details, see the bulletin here– and stay safe by using smoke alarms to protect you and your family from house fires!
Where are smoke alarms required?
- In each sleeping room
- Outside of each sleeping room
- On each floor
Where are smoke alarms not required?
- In the kitchen, bathroom, or garage
Current requirements
- Any battery-powered smoke alarm must contain a non-removable battery that is rated to last 10 years.
- All new smoke alarms must have a label showing date of installation and manufacture, and incorporate a hush feature.
- All existing 120 VAC smoke alarms must comply with the 10-year sealed battery provision.
Upcoming requirement deadlines
- Landlords must upgrade all rental units to comply with current building smoke alarm codes by January 1st, 2016.
- All existing hotels and motels with a fossil fuel burning heater or appliance, fireplace, or attached garage must have carbon monoxide devices installed by January 1st, 2016.
