Thanks to the wonders of home improvement shows and the Internet, homeowners can now take on projects all by themselves and save a great deal of cash. However, there are certain projects that should be left to the experts; in some cases, the risk of doing damage to your own home is just too great compared to any savings or other benefits you’re looking to achieve. Below are several home projects that you should generally trust with a professional, unless you have the proper training:

Tiling

Although it may seem easy to a beginner, not knowing what you’re doing could easily lead to crooked or poorly-spaced tiles. Even worse, amateurs often accidentally leave air pockets underneath the tiles, which make them far more susceptible to breaking.

Tree Removal

There’s a reason there are entire companies that offer this service: cutting down trees, especially ones that are close to your home, is dangerous if not done correctly. Even if it’s just removing a few unruly branches, don’t risk your own safety.

Gas Appliance Repairs

This one usually goes unsaid, but if you’re not a qualified repairperson, you should not be trying to fix any appliances that are connected to a gas line. Whether it’s a stove or a dryer, you could actually cause a gas leak or even a fire if you don’t know what you’re doing. The same applies to any cooling or refrigeration issues: there’s more potential to damage rather than fix.

Roof Repair

If you’re going to clean out the gutters or check for damage, make sure to bring a friend to spot you, and be sure to use a sturdy ladder as well as hand and eye protection. When it comes to replacing broken, loose, or missing roof tiles, it’s best to call an expert who knows how to get the job done safely.
