Encinitas Will Be Celebrating Dia de los Muertos

The city of Encinitas will be hosting its third annual Dia de los Muertos celebration on Saturday, October 29th. Dia de los Muertos, otherwise known as the Day of the Dead, is a holiday on November 1st and 2nd which celebrates life and the remembrance of loved ones who have passed on. This will be a free festival on October 29th from 12 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center.
Encinitas mayor Kristin Gasper said “This city event raises awareness and an appreciation for this significant Latino cultural celebration. Last year’s event drew more than 4,000 people and we anticipate a larger response this year.” The event will have on-going performances throughout the festival along with skull face painting, tissue flowers and sugar skull art-making workshops, and a Day of the Dead exhibit by Paul Ecke Central school students.
There will also be a Community Ofrenda there which is a remembrance alter. This Ofrenda with feature a replica of the Surfing Madonna by Mark Patterson. Everybody is welcome to honor the memory of a family member or friend by bring a photograph to the Ofrenda.
