There are plenty of ways to decorate your home for Halloween, but if you love the look of a haunted house, this article is for you!
Learn how to easily create the look of boarded up windows and turn your lovely home into an abandoned asylum for Halloween!
What You Need to Create Boarded Up Windows
- Wood (bendy wood)
- Wood Glue
- Exterior Paint (any color)
- Paint Brushes
- Stretchy Fabric (optional)
- Outdoor Mounting Tape
- Needle Nose Pliers (optional)
Creating the Boarded Up Window Frame
To start creating boarded up windows, you first need to create the frame. Measure the inside of your windows and measure those dimensions using the bendy wood. Bendy wood are the pieces of lumbar sold at home improvement stores that are lightweight, flat, and bendy. You can usually get them pretty cheap, so this project won’t cost a lot out of pocket.
Once your window frame sides are measured, create jagged edges by holding the wood between two bricks or similar items. Use a hammer or an additional brick to cut off the excess wood from your measured piece. This creates the look of worn wood!
Don’t glue your window frame together just yet, just lay the horizontal and vertical pieces down. You can now cut boards up for your faux window frame. You can lay them however you want, keep them straight or lay them crooked.
Once your window frame and boards look perfect, use the wood glue to glue your pieces in place. You will need something heavy to weigh the wood down where you put glue, so feel free to use bricks or other heavy objects. Once set, leave the glue to dry overnight.
Decorating Your Boarded Up Window for Halloween
If you don’t like the color of the wood you used to create the window frame, feel free to paint it! You can create the look of washed-up boards by diluting grey paint with water. For a ghostly haunted look, mix beige paint with a hint of light green. Or stick with basic spooky black!
When your window frame is dry, you can add stretchy holed fabric to make the window frame even more realistic and frightening. Use black, beige, or gray fabric and make tears in it or use a premade Halloween sheet.
If you want your windows to look extra gross and demolished, you can use needle-nose pliers to easily remove chunks of wood from your Halloween window frame. This will give your house a truly terrifying look!
Mounting Your Boarded Up Windows
Once the boarded up window frames are perfect, you can start mounting them! By using outdoor mounting tape, you can easily and securely attach these spooky Halloween decorations to your house.
You’re done! That’s how easy it is to create boarded up windows! You now have a ghoulish and amazing Halloween decoration for your home that you can reuse every year!
