How to Make Your Own Decorative Throw Pillow
- Real Estate Tips
- DIY, home decor
- December 29, 2020
Decorative throw pillows are phenomenal home décor items. Not only are they functional, but they instantly help make any room cozier. Decorative throw pillows can cost quite a penny though, ranging from as little as $15 to as high as $250!
The cost of a throw pillow is dependent on the fabric, size, design, and shape. You may think you have to spend big bucks if you want a large luxurious faux fur throw pillow, but you could easily make your own decorative throw pillows for a fraction of the cost! You don’t even need a sewing machine!
What You Need to Make Your Own Decorative Throw Pillow
Take a look at the materials you will need to make your own decorative throw pillow:
- 1 Yard of Fabric
- Pillow Insert (16” x 16” or 18” x 18”)
- Hand Sewing Needle
- Fabric Marker
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pins
- Thread
How to Make Your Own Decorative Throw Pillow
Cutting Your Decorative Throw Pillow Fabric
To start making your decorative throw pillow, you will need to lay your fabric on a flat surface. If you chose an 18-inch throw pillow insert, measure out two squares that are exactly 18-inches by 18-inches using a ruler and a fabric marker.
Once your two fabric squares are outlined, cut out the shapes using your scissors. These two fabric squares will make up the front and back of your throw pillow. Lay the squares on top of each other, with the decorative side facing inward. Use pins along three edges to keep the fabric in place.
Sewing Your Decorative Throw Pillow Fabric
You will now sew three sides of the pillow together using running stitches. This hand stitch is very easy to learn and will help you form the decorative throw pillow. Start your horizontal stitches about half an inch from the edge. With the open side, you can sew about 2-inches in toward the middle but leave a gap for your pillow insert.
Once you are done sewing three sides of the fabric, you can cut fabric from the sewed corners so that there is less bulk. Turn your hand-sewn pocket right side out and ensure that your corners are completely poked out.
To help you sew your decorative throw pillow closed, you can fold the two open edges inside the pillow fabric and iron them flat. You can now place your pillow insert inside the fabric pocket. Make sure the corners are completely filled.
Finish Making Your Decorative Throw Pillow
Once your pillow insert fits snug inside the fabric pocket you made, place pins horizontally along the open edge to secure it closed. Make sure you don’t pin the actual pillow insert with the fabric. Using a ladder stitch, you can sew the opening closed! The ladder stitch is invisible and won’t show up on your fabric.
And that’s it! Making a decorative throw pillow takes time but it is super easy! Save money on home décor and personalize your throw pillows with ease!
