Organizing the Linen Closet
- Real Estate Tips
- February 28, 2018
The linen closet can collect clutter whether it’s towels you’ve had since you were a child or toiletries you’re pretty sure they don’t sell anymore. Organizing the linen closet can not only be relieving but can help you get rid of a lot of stuff just hanging out.
Take everything out
You never know what you’ll find hidden in the mountains of towels and bedding. You may find towels you never knew you had or extra toiletries. When you take everything out and create a game plan, you’ll be less likely to dump things in and recreate the mess.
Don’t overstore
It’s time to get rid of any access clutter hanging around. If you have frayed, stiff, smelly towels or cloths, it’s time to dump them. You can actually donate any sheets or towels to a local animal shelter! Also, try to resist keeping multiple sets of bed sheets. Aim for 3-4 sets per bed in the home like 2 light sheets for the summer and 2 flannel sheets for the winter. You should also keep about 2 bath towels per person, and 4-5 extra for any guests.
Create sections
Create an area or designate shelves for each category of items:
- Towels
- Sheets
- Blankets
- Supplies (depending on the extra space)
This will help maintain your organization and make it easier to find things. Reserve any higher shelves for bulky items like sleeping bags, extra pillows, or air mattresses.
Organizing tools
You have to find the right products and containers that will make a difference in your closet. Lazy Susans are great for health and beauty supplies because they take up less space and make it easy to access the toiletries. Invest in shelf dividers to separate stacks of sheets and towels, and you can even use show holders or hanging shelves for more vertical storage.
Folding bedding and sheets
Folding all the bedding and sheets can be difficult. Some people prefer folding the set and then shoving it into the pillow case. Others use a folded pillowcase to wrap around the stack of sheets like a present.
You can also organize your towels. You can choose by type like body towels, hand towels, and wash cloths, or you can designate a certain hue that matches your bathroom to each family member. Whatever you like best, adapt it and stick to it.
