San Diego Library Named Top Library 2012

As an Encinitas real estate agent and resident I am so proud to learn that the San Diego County Library system was named the best in the United States for 2012. This is just one of the reasons that being an Encinitas real estate agent is so fulfilling; knowing that I am a part of the best county in the world.

The San Diego County Library system was awarded the Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year award for its efforts to create a larger sense of community and extend its reach into programs that set itself apart from just being another library.

When the housing market crisis occurred in 2008, SDCL was quick to react and joined forces with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Housing Opportunities Collaborative to offer residents free, four-hour clinics at many of its 33 branches. Since its inception over 3100 families have been taught about the mechanics of foreclosure and were provided individualized counseling from lawyers, mortgage counselors, real estate professionals, and credit counselors who donated their time. This is just one of many programs the SDCL has offered and continues to offer.

SDCL has also focused its efforts to increase circulation, despite a budget crunch. In 2005 the library’s funding was cut from $54 million to $37.8 million, and yet despite this the cuts SDCL began a new program to expand circulation, which they did from 4.1 million that year to 12.4 million last year.

The Encinitas branch of the San Diego County Library in particular is a crown-jewel for the city, with its lounge atmosphere, location only five blocks from the beach (which gives it one of the best views of the ocean in the city), and 2,000 square-foot community, which is why I am so excited to hear of its award designation. Congratulations SDCL.

Encinitas is, in my opinion, one of the best places to live. If you are looking to purchase or sell a home in Encinitas, let an Encinitas Realtor help you.
