What to Bring to an Open House

When you are trying to buy a home, you are probably on a constant lookout for open houses and home viewings. Sometimes you may discover one that looks appealing at the last minute. Before you rush out the door to look at your potential new home, make sure you bring the following essential items.

A Camera

This is one of the easiest items to remember, as most modern phones are equipped with cameras. However, it is one of the most important items to bring along to an open house. As you tour multiple homes, it may be difficult to keep track of each one. Taking numerous photographs can help you remember what each home looks like, and review their strengths and weaknesses at your convenience.

A Notebook

While it’s true a picture is worth a thousand words, you’ll still want to jot down notes about each home. The realtor showing off the home will likely mention important details, like the dimensions of each room and unique selling points. These notes along with detailed photographs can help you immensely when reviewing your options later on.

Measuring Tape

Even if your realtor informs you of the square footage of the home, bringing a measuring tape is a good idea. You may want to know if your favorite floor lamp or entertainment center will fit comfortably within the dimensions of the new home, and a measuring tape is an accurate way to determine if your existing furniture will be accommodated.

Housemates

When attending an open house, it’s a good idea to bring everyone who will be living in the new home. This may include spouses, relatives, or older children. Getting everyone’s opinion on a new home is important to ensure the happiness of all residents. Plus, having more than one set of eyes can help identify potential problems or benefits you may have missed on your own.

A “Go Bag”

While most people reserve these for late-stage pregnancy runs to the hospital, a “go bag” or a “bugout bag” can be incredibly useful for last-minute open houses. Your bag should include a digital camera with spare batteries, as well as your measuring tape and a notebook and pens. Keep this in your car, and you will always be prepared for surprise open houses.
